How to Assess Dog Weight

The Body Condition Score (BCS) is more reliable than weight alone because ideal weight varies enormously within breeds. A 9-point scale (WSAVA) or 5-point scale is used. Feel your dog's ribs: at ideal weight, ribs are palpable with slight pressure and have minimal fat covering. From above, there should be a visible waist tuck. From the side, a slight abdominal tuck should be visible.

Even mild obesity (10% above ideal) significantly increases risk of joint disease, diabetes, heart disease and reduces life expectancy. Conversely, underweight dogs may have nutritional deficiencies, parasites, or underlying illness.

Ideal weight is breed and individual-specific. Breed standards give guidance but individual variation is wide. The best indicator is Body Condition Score rather than a target number. A dog at BCS 4–5/9 (or 3/5) with visible waist and palpable ribs is at ideal weight regardless of what the scale says. Your vet can provide breed-specific targets and assess BCS clinically.
Target 0.5–1% of body weight per week — so for a 30kg dog, 150–300g per week. This is achieved by reducing daily calories by 20–25% from current intake. Weigh monthly, not weekly, to account for normal fluctuation. Work with your vet for dogs needing to lose more than 15% of body weight — a prescription weight management diet and exercise plan may be recommended.
