Weight Ranges vs Body Condition Score

Weight ranges give a rough guide but body condition score (BCS) is more clinically useful because there's huge individual variation even within breeds. A male German Shepherd can be healthy at anywhere from 28–40 kg depending on frame. Use this tool for a quick sense check, then assess BCS (feel the ribs, check waist tuck) for a more accurate picture.

Monthly for most adult pets. Puppies and kittens: weekly or fortnightly to track growth. Senior pets (7+ years dogs, 10+ years cats): monthly, or at every vet visit. Any time you're managing weight loss or gain: fortnightly. Weigh at the same time of day (ideally morning) on the same scale for consistency.
